The Wrapp - Zombie strats, anime GTA, and cutesy slime

Hey there, welcome to our latest edition of The Wrapp.

This is a chance for you to see what the various members of the Pocket Gamer team are planning to play over this weekend and will, hopefully, give you an idea of some of the weird and wonderful things we get up to when we’re not keeping you up to speed with the latest news and tips. Heck, you might even find a new game to play.

The week is still young in terms of announcements, so I'm not sure where my mobile journey will take me. I still have some other games on deck and am continuing to explore options for Off The App Store, but this week's podcast episode has got me thinking more about spin-offs. Mobile instalments for big series are common, but sometimes the developer takes the time to transform them into something completely different that still works.

It looks like I'll be on the hunt for those odd and interesting mobile spinoffs and report back to base!

It seems to be the season of CBTs lately. Last week, I was preoccupied with Mongil: Star Dive, but this weekend, it’s Neverness to Everness’ turn. I’ve only cleared my very first mission so far, so I’m excited to discover more about this oddly titled Zenless Zone Zero-esque RPG over the weekend. Here’s hoping my tennis elbows don’t start acting up again…

This weekend is largely going to be a wind-down after a very busy Develop down in (surprisingly) sunny Brighton. However, alongside the usual (Pokémon TCG Pocket and Pokémon Go), I’m hoping to dip into After Inc — Ndemic Creations’ interesting follow-up to Plague Inc.

It’s a ‘what if’ that takes place years and years after zombies overrun Earth (topical, as 28 Years Later is in cinema at the moment) and uses the same drip-drip, stamina juggling systems as their previous outing; however, this time it's a map-claiming, base-building situation. I’ve completed a couple of the scenarios already, and it scales surprisingly well and with the same urgency as PI.

On the subject of strategy games, I’ve been running through Civilization VII again, having let it sit for a while since launch. I’m going through it to see how the level-ups and unlocks feel at higher levels. It’s an interesting idea, considering most people I’ve spoken to about it tend to focus on set leaders and playstyles. It’s just… really in the background, considering it could be such a big deal.

In my previous Wrapp, I mentioned playing some Silver and Blood - well, things took a turn. The game has absorbed me, and I couldn’t be happier! It’s been a while since I had the pleasure of playing a gacha that is so generous with its SSRs, where the progress system does not rely on Stamina, and has no such limitations. It’s fantastic!

Aside from doing my Cookie Run: Kingdom dailies and playing some more SAB, I noticed a game that caught my eye: The Case of the Golden Idol. It's available via Netflix, where you have to examine various clues and solve some murder mysteries. I also noticed that the last day to play is July 15th, so if you’re eager to check it out, there are just a couple of days left.

This weekend, I will be preparing to travel to TennoCon, so I will unfortunately not have much time to game. I shall still try to pull my Eevee Grove packs to finish my full-art collection in Pokémon TCG Pocket, but besides that, it will be shopping and packing.

I'm braving the heat to go to Pride this weekend, so I don't think I'll be gaming all that much. I'll probably grab my Switch a couple times over the weekend while cooling off, though - or when I'm recovering and dodging rays on Sunday. I'm still working my way through all of the Ace Attorney franchise, because I have a terrible completionist streak, so I guess I might end up defending a whale in court or cross-examining a parrot or something.

This week, I've got my eye on Rogue Slime, a turn-based deckbuilding RPG. That combination of words never fails to get my attention, and it's great to see something that leans on the cuter side of the aesthetics spectrum. Sure, I like something macabre and melancholy as much as the next person (Bloodborne and Dark Souls are some of my favourite games, after all), but it's nice to take a colourful break now and then.

Somebody turn down the heat. But being serious, as the weather gets hot, I’m going with the old chestnut of that Japanese tradition where you get scared to cool off. With that in mind, I’m going more for existential dread than full-on horror with Cultist Simulator on mobile. Aside from that, it’s mostly relaxing and trying my damndest not to melt like a popsicle.
